My Story
In September 2023, I underwent invasive spinal cord surgery and had to relearn how to walk. It was in the T5 - T7 on the spine which is close to my heart, causing the surgery to be risky. This surgery was not only terrifying but also added a significant challenge to my life as a college student. Relearning how to walk while managing my academic responsibilities has been an tedious journey filled with determination and resilience. Each day in physical therapy brought small but crucial victories, from progressing with resistance bands to taking my first steps without assistance. This experience has taught me the importance of patience, humility, and the unwavering support of loved ones. Despite the obstacles, I remain committed to both my education and my recovery, embracing each step forward with gratitude and perseverance.
The Timeline
September 28, 2023 - First week back home from in patient rehab
2023
In September 2023, I underwent emergency spinal cord surgery after a calcified deposit pressed against my spinal cord, leaving me temporarily paralyzed. What followed was a long and emotional journey. Relearning how to walk while continuing college, using a walker, and attending physical therapy sessions was no easy feat. By November 2023, I was walking without mobility assistance, something I once feared might never happen again.
2024
In October 2024, I had to return to physical therapy after losing grip strength in both hands and being unable to lift my arms past my shoulders. Over six months, I worked tirelessly to rebuild my strength and mobility. During that time, my physical therapist encouraged me to begin running to aid my recovery. In January 2025, I took my first steps back into running. Running helped not only my physical healing process but also my mental health.
2025
Since then, running has become a powerful symbol of resilience for me. I fundraised to run the Disney Springtime Surprise 10-Miler with AdventHealth (the hospital where I had my surgery and therapy) and completed it in April 2025! I also ran the Disney Food & Wine Half Marathon in October 2025.
The goal for 2026
Now, I have my sights set on my biggest goal yet: completing 26.2 miles at the 2026 NYC Marathon! Running has become so much more than a sport for me; it’s a celebration of strength, perseverance, and possibility. My life mantra is “Nothing can hold me back,” and I strive to prove that every day.
